Before our eyes

Kids grow fast.

When we first adopted the boys, a couple dozen people told us to savor every moment because kids grow fast. And then a few months later when Esther-Faith was born, we got the same advice.

Kids grow fast.

But when you're in the thick of things with those kids--keeping medically fragile kids alive; battling reactive attachment disorder; managing symptoms of behavioral and emotional disabilities, well, remembering to "savor every moment" becomes more difficult. Frankly, some moments aren't the savoring type. And yet, some moments are perfect.

And then, we turn around and found we have a grown man in our house. A teenager who still needs us very much, but is pushing against everything we have to offer. A man in many ways. Still a boy in many more.

His transition from little boy to grown boy is most apparent when we look at very similar photos from year to year. School photos. Family photos. Random photos of activities that we repeat every year.

Like these.
